The Dombar people are a social ground in India and are segregated from the mainstream society. Many Dombar families are nomadic and earn their living by entertaining as street performers.
The 2 videos below show a typical act in what is known as Dombaryache Khel or Dombar Acrobatics. I was fortunate enough to see this act on Pune’s JM Road during one of my trips to India. In this act a young Dombar girl is seen balancing herself on a wheel that is on a string, tied to sticks on both ends, with an object on her head. The act is complemented by older family members who play musical instruments. It is usually the younger members of the family who perform acrobatic feats.
I think a more elaborate version of Dombaryache Khel would be Cirque Du Soleil! It is unfortunate that these people don’t get that kind of attention and recognition.
Although many of us have moved ahead with the times, we still need to appreciate and preserve our centuries old culture and traditions! What do you think?
