The intimidation has begun.
There is a huge police presence on the streets of downtown Toronto these days. The police are well-armed and well-prepared (complete with riot gear). They are everywhere on the streets and even in vans with dark tinted windows parked on the road side.
I was walking around in my lunch hour and saw literally hundreds of police officers. It’s almost as if they are there so people “don’t even think about it”. It was difficult to take these pictures as they are watching everyone. Although it may be innocent enough, anyone taking pictures in this area in front of hundreds of police officers and dozens of CCTV cameras, does look suspicious. With the world leaders descending upon Toronto in a few days, the police won’t be taking any chances.
The 3-meter high security fences, erected at a cost of $5.5 million, have gone up and they are almost ready to fully secure the perimeter around Metro Toronto Convention Center. I’m glad I got pictures of the convention center soon after the fences were erected – as it is now too late to go there without getting interrogate by police.
Stay tuned for Part 3 for more pictures as we get closer to the Summit date (June 26-27, 2010).
