Today (March 8th) is International Women’s Day. At Bharari, we are marking this occasion by showcasing photos of ordinary women who are extraordinary in their special way.
These women are cured leprosy patients living in Baba Amte’s Anandwan. They are street sweepers and they keep Anandwan’s roads clean. Dr. Vikas Amte, Baba Amte’s elder son, says the residents of Anandwan are bound together by a “friendship of pain”.
Grandma taking care of her grandson. Indeed, this is a very special relationship. Grandmothers have a knack for protecting grandchildren from their mother when she is angry at them. Also, a grandmother’s stories are legendary for her grandchildren.
For village women, everyday struggles include walking long distances for fetching water, cleaning, cooking, taking care of children and the elderly, and helping with farm work.
There’s a popular Marathi song that goes like this: अरे सौसार सौसार, जसा तवा चुलावर … हाताला चटके तेव्हा मिळे भाकर…
Nothing can replace a mother, whether you call her mom, maa, mommy, amma, aai…
Once again, happy International Women’s Day! Hope you enjoyed our tribute.
