This striking image inside Saint Joseph’s Oratory in this French-Canadian city reminds us at once of the cruelty humans are capable of as well as the healing powers of faith.

It is the largest church in Canada.

St. Joseph’s Oratory, a Roman Catholic basilica in Montreal, Quebec, is not only the largest church in Canada, but the Oratory’s dome is the third largest of its kind in the world.

The idyllic church is located on the slopes of Mount Royal and is an impressive sight from the gates.

More than 200 steps need to be climbed to reach the chapel. Although we didn’t see any at the time we visited, we’ve heard of devotees who climb on their knees in the hopes of gaining a favour from God.

The pipe organ at St. Joseph’s Oratory is loud and can be heard from the gates, but it does not break the serenity of the place. It was actually mesmerizing (see video).

Many people miss seeing this since it is not in the touristy “Old Montreal”. We think this basilica is a must-visit attraction – touristy or not!
