Mr. Gogawale (“mountain man”) resting on Mt. Kamalgad.  He is the care-taker of a temple on this mountain and earns his living by playing host to trekkers.  He also acts as a guide.  The 81-year old gentleman has the stamina of an 18-year old!

Mr. Gogawale held a Masters degree and had spent a majority of his life in the mountains.  His love and passion for nature was awesome!  His biggest fear was the densely forested plateau of Koleshwar becoming “New Mahabaleshwar”, which well-funded developers are currently fighting for with the under-funded environmentalists.  It’s only a matter of time until it is gone.

Koleshwar plateau as seen from atop Mt. Kamalgad near Wai, Maharashtra, India. Developers are lobbying to make a “New Mahabaleshwar” hill-station on Koleshwar.  Can you believe it?  I trekked through the dense forest of Koleshwar and it will indeed be sad to see all the trees cut down to make another “hill-station” where the city slickers can go for a “weekend getaway”.  Then again, if I don’t intend to do anything about this, then I have no right to complain.  Right?

An elderly local (81 years old) by the name of Mr. Gogawale, who was as fit as an 18 year old, told us that Drona from the epic Mahabharata had spent some time on this plateau.
