Thursday Challenge – “Round”

SubscribeFiled Under: Thursday Challenge,by Bhakti and Neeraj

We are pleased to take part in the weekly Thursday Challenge series organized by A picture related to a new theme announced each week will be posted here. Today’s theme is the “Round”.

The photo below of a chariot wheel was taken at the Sun Temple in Korark in the state of Odhisa (Orissa) in India. The intricately carved 13th century temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The temple, dedicated to the Sun God, is shaped like a chariot with 6 wheels on each side. Each of the 12 chariot wheels is a sundial and the shadow cast by the spokes can be used to tell the precise time of the day.

The carved scenes at the center of the spokes depict scenes of the daily activities of the people of that time.

The entire temple has erotic carvings that depict scenes from the Kamasutra. We will share more pictures of this temple in our “Northeastern Chronicles” series – coming soon!
